Be Careful of Domain Name Renewal Scams

April 5, 2010

Just the other day I received the following email  from domainrenewalonline.org…

Be advised

Do not miss, it is time to renew you domain name ONLINEPROFITSCOACH.com, the expiry date is 60 days .
Our company allows to renew your domain name automatically.
Follow this link in order to renew your domainname now
–> http://ONLINEPROFITSCOACH.com.domainrenewalonline.org/

Once you have completed the payment stage the above mentioned name will be renewed and a conformation will be sent.

Of course I realized it was a scam right off the bat but I clicked on the link anyways to see that exactly they were trying to do.

When I clicked the link I was brought to this page:

Yeah that’s right…$79.95 for a 1 year renewal!  Or I could just renew it with my current registrar for $8.

I have seen this same type of scam run with letters in the mail telling you to renew your domain as well.

For those unfamiliar with domain renewals, if you are paying more than $10 you need to use some one else.  I mostly use GoDaddy and they offer domain renewals for around $10 and you can set it to automatically renew year after year without your doing anything.

Just be aware of these type of scams and don’t fall for them.
