Part 2:  Split Testing

Bottom line…if you are not testing in your online business then you are leaving money on the table.

Which is an easier way to increase your sales or optins by 50 %…Getting 50% more traffic to your salespage or squeeze page or increasing your conversion of your salespage or squeeze page by 50%?

We all know hard it is to get traffic so getting 50% more traffic quickly is pretty hard to do.  But increasing your conversion by 50% is not unheard of.  Especially if you are not currently doing any split testing.

To get started split testing I recommend that you use the A/B split tester in Google Website Optimizer (which is free and really easy to use).

Setting up a split test is really easy.  Just take the page you want to test and make ONE change to it.  I say just one because you need to be able to tell which element effected the conversion.  If you make several changes you will not know which change made the difference.

What should you test?

The first thing to test is your headline.  The headline is what’s responsible for getting your visitors attention and it either gets them to continue reading or hitting the back button on their browser.  So start there.

You should also test price, images, layout, background colors, bonuses, video and the list goes on and on.

When you start testing and results come in you need to keep a couple things in mind.  The highest conversion rate is not always the winner.  For example if you are testing a $37 price vs a $47 price you need to determine how much money you are making.  Lets say the $37 price converts at 2.5% and the $47 price converts at 2%.  It would look like the $37 price is the winner but wait.  If you get 1000 visitors the $37 price would make you $925 but the $47 price would make you $940.  So the $47 price is actually the winner because you goal is to make more money right?

Still not sold on the benefits of spilt testing?  Look at this….

That is the result from a split test I recently did on one of my sales pages.  Everyone these days is saying the video salespages are killing it.  Well, instead of just taking them at their word I decided to first test it out and my long form sales copy did twice as good as the video salespage.

Sounds like a pretty hyped up post title doesn’t it!  Well, it’s not and I am going to show you exactly how I increased the income for some of my sites by 20% to 50% overnight.

Part 1:  Add An Upsell To Your Current Products.

I have heard people say time and time again that if you add an upsell to your product around 20-30% of people will take you up on it.  Well, I never really believed it until I tried it….And it’s true!

I have a product I sell that is a digital product (FYI – it’s not a “how to make money online” product).  I just sold the product and nothing else.  So my average order is $37, which is the cost of the product.

I decided to give an upsell a try and created a physical version of my product.  Now let me be clear…this is the EXACT same product, the only difference is that it is a physical version and it is mailed to the customer.

I started offering it as an upsell for $27.  So basically someone buys that digital version for $37 and then after the purchase I send them to a page that offers the physical version of what they just bought for $27.

The Results:  29% of my customers are adding the upsell to their order.  So what I have done is increased my average order from $37 to $44.89 or an increase of 21%!

Not too shabby!  Now there are some product costs since I have to have the digital version of the product made into a physical copy but they are minimal.  And to be honest shipping costs less than I charge for shipping so in most cases that difference makes up for the product cost.

If you are currently selling a product and you do not have an upsell you are leaving money on the table.  Upsells can be very easy to make, just create a physical version like I did, offer a complimentary (very important) product, offer some PLR products, or whatever.  Just go get it done and put some more money it your pocket.

The biggest problem I see with people who are just getting started with their online business is that they are focused on the wrong goal.  Many people see all the big numbers these internet marketing “gurus” are pulling in and they think to themselves…”How can I use the internet to make a million dollars in a month?”

Well, the truth is you can’t!  It just doesn’t work that way.  Yeah some of the big name marketers make obscene amounts of money it a very short time but the one think you are forgetting is that they have been doing this for a very long time and have several advantages in their corner…like a huge list, other “gurus” who owe then a favor and promote their products and so on.

But if you look at when they got started they were most likely just focused on creating a couple hundred extra bucks a month to take care of some bills.  And this is exactly the mindset you should have.

Just focus on one bill, like your car payment, and work to make enough money to pay that bill.  So instead of trying to make millions just try to make $500 to pay a bill or two.

When you set your income goal lower you will have a much higher success rate and you won’t get distracted by the dreaded “shinny ball” syndrome that so many people do.  There is nothing wrong with big goals (and I recommend you have them) but you need to start small and then continually build on your successes.

So how do you do this?  Well, first off you need to have a method for making some money online.  Then just focus on that ONE (not 2, 3 or 10) method until you master it and make money with.  Then build on that or add new methods to your arsenal.

I am not the only one with this thinking.  Anik Singal just release a GREAT product that addresses this exact issue and I applaud him for it.  The product focuses on helping you make your first $500 online.  He is not claiming to make you a millionaire.  Nope.  He just wants to help you make $500.  If you are yet to make $500 online then this is what you need to be doing….

So I just heard about a new tool from Justin Brooke called Unbounce.com.  This thing lets you create landing pages, squeeze pages, sales pages, contact forms and a bunch more in minutes instead of hours.  On top of that is also has a built in A/B split testing feature so you can track conversions and make new pages on the fly to test your control against.

I just finished testing it out and I made a quick video squeeze page in a matter of minutes.  Of course I was just using bogus info but even to make a true squeeze page that you would use in your business would take an hour at most.  Better yet, it creates very professional looking page.  Here is the example I created in 10 minutes.  I just swiped a video from YouTube (you can put in your own video of course) and added some quick text and an optin form.  Of course you would want to insert your actual autoresponder code from Aweber or whatever software you use….

Pretty slick.  But the best feature in my opinion is the built in conversion tracking and split testing features.  Here is a screen shot of what I am talking about:

As you can see if gives you stats on how many visitors you have received, how many conversions you got (in this case it would be someone opting in) and your conversion rate.

Below that you have the option to create variations of the page to try and increase your conversions by changing up the headline, using bullets points,  switching the video, etc.

Of course I realized it was a scam right off the bat but I clicked on the link anyways to see that exactly they were trying to do.

When I clicked the link I was brought to this page:

Yeah that’s right…$79.95 for a 1 year renewal!  Or I could just renew it with my current registrar for $8.

I have seen this same type of scam run with letters in the mail telling you to renew your domain as well.

For those unfamiliar with domain renewals, if you are paying more than $10 you need to use some one else.  I mostly use GoDaddy and they offer domain renewals for around $10 and you can set it to automatically renew year after year without your doing anything.

Just be aware of these type of scams and don’t fall for them.

Every online marketer should be building a list. We all know that. But what do you do when someone opts in to your list? Do you just send them to the default optin page? If so, you are leaving money on the table.

For the last couple of months I have been experimenting with sending my subscribers to an affiliate offer when they optin to my list. I have used affiliate offers and CPA offers with pretty good results.

The best results have come from this formula…When someone optins in to my list I have my autoresponder (Aweber) redirect them to a page on my site that simply says “Thank You For Subscribing. Check Out This Great Offer Below”. Then below that I say “Our #1 Recommended (insert whatever product you are promoting)” Under that there is simply a banner for the product I am promoting.

So if you are in the dog training niche, you would simply say “Our #1 Recommended Dog Training Guide” and then link out to it with your affiliate link.

Over the last 30 days I have made 7 sales and made around $130.

Am I going to retire on this…NO. But it is free money that I just added to my bottom line with absolutely no cost. I should make me over $1,000 in the next year and it took me about 15 minutes to set up. I’ll take it.

To do this in Aweber just login to you autoresponder account and click on “My Lists” -> “Confirmed Opt-in”, then scroll to the bottom of that page where it says “Confirmation Success Page”.

And enter in the page where you put the offer up. This will all take you at most 30 minutes to set up.

You can also do this in the “Web Form” section under “Thank You Page”. But I use this page to explain to my subscribers how to confirm their subscription because I use double-optin and getting them on my list is my first objective.

I was in the Warrior Forum the other day and someone had posted the question “What would you do with a $100 to get started as a IM?”

I thought I would share the answer I gave with all of you:

Buy a quality Private Labe Rights package ($27 here), get hosting (HostGator.com $5) and a domain (Godaddy $10), get an autoresponder (Aweber.com $19).

Build a squeeze page which gives away one or the PLR products you bought in exchange for people giving their name and email. After they optin to get the free product redirect them to a one-time-offer which offers the rest of the PLR products for $27.

Send traffic to the squeeze page using your forum sig, blog comments, article submissions, traffic exchanges, your blog, etc.

You will get some sales but the bigger asset is the list you are building which you can recommend affiliate products to and eventually launch your own product to. Your first product…how I started with $100 and made $XXX in XX months.

This all only costs around $60 so you even have $40 left to use for advertising.
